Flaine is a small ski resort in Haute Savoie in the French Alps, situated in a bowl between the mountains. The resort was opened in 1969 and was designed to give a feeling of peaceful privacy through urban development, architecture and design. Skiing is definitely Flaine's strong point with one of the best snow records in the Alps and ski runs suitable for all levels of skiers, making it an excellent place for young families.
Even though Flaine is renowned for its great snow coverage, it was the first ski resort in Europe to install snow cannons, a device that forces water and pressurised air together to make snow. Flaine is part of one of the biggest ski areas in France; Grand Massif. This extremely large ski area came together in 1980. It has 137 runs with a total of 165 miles of skiable area, and contains 236 snow cannons and 77 lifts.
Reasons why skiers choose to ski there
Flaine is a very convenient resort, as it sits close to lots of great cities and villages. One to visit is Geneva; it's around an hour and a half away by car and is a beautiful city to see. It hosts the annual Christmas Festival which is held in November through to January and is home to a wide range of museums and art galleries. If you don't fancy either of those you could visit Lake Geneva, the biggest lake in Switzerland, which offers beautiful views in the winter and relaxing beaches and dozens of water sports in the summer.
There are regular bus services to other resorts, cities and towns, with Geneva and Chamonix being the most popular. The resort also offers a cinema, snooker hall, video games arcade, indoor climbing, bowling and ice-skating. It would be possible to enjoy an additional skiing holiday to Chamonix within the same winter holiday should the thought cross your mind.
