Portillo in Chile has received six feet (1.8m) of fresh snow in two days, and the snow continues to fall on its South American slopes. Portillo receives nearly 300 days of sunshine and an average of 25 feet of snowfall each season.
The fresh powder arrived just at the right time for the resort’s opening weekend. The 2007 summer began last Saturday, June 16th and runs through to October 6th, 2007.
Other major resorts in Chile, Valle Nevado, La Parva and El Colorado close to capital Santiago, also reported heavy falls – compared to 40cm/16 inches on opening weekend last year, and each saw upwards of 15,000 people ski their slopes each day of the weekend.
