Up to 45cm (18 inches) of fresh dry snow has fallen over several Australian resorts since Monday this week. On top of this snowfall, which is set to continue and comes on top of healthy falls earlier in the month, it has been cold enough for snowmaking to operate at capacity.
A spokesperson for Mt Hotham described conditions as, “A satisfyingly arctic start to the 2007 season.” The resort has received 35cm (14 inches) of snow in the past week, most of it the last few nights. The snow base has doubled since last week and is now a very healthy 60cm (two feet) in man made areas with over 50cm (20 inches)of natural snow on open runs. The Village Chair has opened and this weekend will see at least eight lifts operating with Cobungra Plater at Dinner Plain commencing Friday and The Drift open from Saturday morning.
At Perisher Blue the base across the entire resort is building rapidly, just in time for the opening of the Blue Cow sector on Friday. Lifts expected to operate in Blue Cow this Friday include the Summit Quad Chair (giving access to Zali’s), Early Starter Double Chair, Terminal Quad Chair and Pony Ride Rope Tow. Zali’s will offer upper-intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders more opportunities this weekend,
In Perisher Valley, Front Valley is in full swing with the Mitchell T-bar and the Village Eight Express chair are operating, as well as three Ski Carpets and Tom Thumb for beginners. For freeriders, two Fusion Terrain Parks are set up on Front Valley, featuring a range of fun-boxes and rails. A brand new six-metre down-rail and a two-metre stall-bar have been added overnight and more features are set to be added soon.
