Despite a strong end to the season thanks to heavy snow, Vermont reported its worst winter since 1994-5, largely due to a slow start with warm weather over the crucial early holiday periods.
3.8 million skiers and boarders visited Vermont’s ski areas, down seven percent on a poor 2005-6 season and the lowest number since winter 1994-95.
The difficult conditions in New England, the MidWest and Eastern and Central Canada went largely unreported by international media, which highlighted instead good snow in Colorado and British Columbia and giving the impression this was the norm across the continent and at the same time noting the challenging conditions in the European Alps long after conditions there had improved.
Vermont’s figures could have been worse but a heavy snowfall before the American
President’s Day holiday in February and excellent falls in March and through April helped the season overall to recover a little. Howsever some late season snow arrived too late with most people already in spring and summer sports mode.
