I've been wanting to go to the USA for some time, and I would to also try learning to ski!

look at Winter Park Resort, Colorado, USA A place for beginners, the ski school at Winter Park Resort has a good reputation for its personal teaching. The snow falls can be nine metres in total this means no ice patches. (sking on ice is not a good way to start but can lead to a steep learning curve.)

if you give me more of an idea on budget, numbers in your party, type of accomodation i'll give you some specifics....

If you recommend any local bars as well, then that would be great.

1. In itself its a reasonable size and will keep you busy for quite a few days.
2. The Vail Resorts Ski School is excellent - although I was already a reasonably competent skiier when I first went there I was taught to improve to a higher level in about 10 minutes. So much did I enjoy the experience that I am in regular e-mail contact with my Instructor who still teaches there.
3. If you are there for a couple of weeks you should learn enough to be able to ski quite well and from Breck you can on the same Colorado Pass go to Keystone, Arapahoe Basin and Vail. I believe the free buses are still available to get you to the other resorts.
4. If you have transport try Loveland which is back down I70 towards Denver.
5. Forgot to mention if you go to ski school the cost includes the Lift Pass so do not pay twice.
6. It is sometimes possible to get bargain lift passes. I once bought a pass for $40 which covered the whole of April - check the net on a regular basis or call one of the many local ski shops in resort or in Denver.
7. None of the Colorado resorts have very lively nightlife (compared with Europe) but this may be a function of the fact that it only takes a couple of beers to get p....d (maybe I am a lightweight). Altitude is an issue and living at 9500 ft does cause problems for some people - I smoke (a pipe) but height has not been an issue other than making me go to bed at 9 every night after a hard days skiing.
8. Obviously the US is good value at the moment.
9. The skiing in the US is not like Europe where in many resorts you may ski from Village to Village, have a coffee or something stronger. The other thing about Colorado in particular is it seldom gets icy which is bit of a boost to confidence for begiiners - however it may be thought that an ability to cope with ice is probably a good thing.
