As mentioned, Zell am See has a life outside winter sports, which is centred partly on the lake, partly on the numerous other sports and leisure facilities and partly on the historic town centre and the castle. Ice sailing and ice surfing are possible on Lake Zell when frozen. There are 40km (32 miles) of marked winter hiking trails. In the air there's a choice of scenic flights in light aircraft, gliding, paragliding, hang gliding, even parachuting.
On the slopes, apart from skiing and 'boarding at night, there's snow rafting, freestyle skiing camps and an illuminated toboggan run.
The indoor ice rink stages hockey and curling matches as well as skating. There's an indoor riding school, sleigh rides, even llama riding! The multi-sports centre has indoor pool, sauna and solarium and there's also a beauty farm, bowling, a cinema, library and museum in the town. Concerts, exhibitions, festivals and theatre are staged in the castle at nearby Kaprun and there are also art galleries.
If you still feel there's not enough to do off the slopes locally, many excursions are organised from the town, with popular destinations including the thermal springs of the Gastein Valley (see Bad Gastein or Bad Hofgastein), the salt mines at Hallein, Europe's highest waterfalls at Krimml and the provincial capital of Salzburg.
